You can get three free Xbox live months one at a time if you want, but you’ll have to change account names each month. Simply go to the 360’s dashboard and “sign up” (by signing out of your account) and register a new name. When you fill out all the information (make sure the zip code and the city are correct, but you can use any city/zip combo like Beverly Hills, California, 90210 works) and finally get to the payment options, select Silver membership. It’ll ask you if you’re sure, so just hit yes that you’re sure, but then it will say you qualify for a free 1-month trial immediately. Just take the 1-month trial and play as you please. When your month runs up, you can just make a new silver account and get another free 1-month trial again. I regularly have guests over to play, so instead of making guest[1] and such and only getting to do social matches, we can make a bunch of free 1-month trials and everyone gets to play ranked then if they want. Good times! edit — I have been informed that there are only three 1-month trials of Xbox Live Gold (you can have as many Silvers as you please AFAIK) per x360. Still not bad!
EDIT — May not work with the new “NXE” dashboard update. I’ve already used up my freebies to know whether it works on the NXE dashboard (the one with avatars), and a few people have reported it does not work on the new kind, although it did work with the old versio. It does work with the original dashboard, though. If there is a way to revert back from the NXE, I have no idea how to do it.
Yea only one problem, you only have 3 Free 1 month trials on each Xbox. Don’t say im wrong, try it out yourself and you will see, the fourth time there wont be a free trial. Also i called Xbox about this and they confirmed that you only have 3 per Xbox.

No, you can make all of them on the same day if you want. Apparently some Xboxes only have a few free trials. Mine only had three, but others have told me they can get five. I’m not certain there is an easy method to determine how many are left =/

It’s per Xbox itself, not per account. Your brother can play Live for free in he signs in as a Guest under your name, but if he wants his own account name he’ll have to get his own membership. The free trials seem to vary between 3 or 5 in number, maybe depending on how new the Xbox is (I’m not sure why).

i have a 12 month but i want to make and extra “free trial” account and start playing on that daily because all of my friends made a free 1 month and it never ended…but the question is..is that because they just never use it and it will end after they have played on it for 1 month total or is it like a gold membership were it will end over the certine amount of time and theres just hasnt done that!?

You make a silver account, not a gold one. A gold one will ask you for a credit card number. When you confirm you don’t want a gold one, the trial offer will be made.

Hi, just found this out and ive seen it before, this might sound dumb but i made my first silver account, (cuz already had gold for years) and saw this option, i got stuck in menus cuz i didnt want to start the 1 free gold month so i turned it off>.>
So 2 questions, 1. if i didnt accept it when i could have on this account, is there anyway i can get it back and activate it?

Hi, I just got my xbox back from the repair system, but the xbox i had before had run out of he 1 month trials, will i have any trials left on the xbox i recieved because it is not my original box , its a repaired one answer back pls.
Viren: I also have a repaired system and may try it out (but have not attempted it yet). The one you receive from a repair IS your original xbox, with modifications. You kept your drive, which stored all of your account information. I would be interested to know whether someone who purchases another/larger HDD might also get additional free month(s)..

That wouldn’t be a free month trial, then, would it? There’s no reason to suspect it would end on the actual calendar month, it’s likely 30 days from the time it started.

silver does not ask for a credit card gold does not ask for one only if it the trial if its not then it wont need a credit card if you buy it from a store the gta trail wont ask for a credit card.

i have a westell 2200, a pc, and the the ethernet cable my 360 came with…but the 2200 only has ONE ethernet port and it is taken up by the one connected to the computer…is there any posbbile way i can connect my live?? like unplug one of them without screwing up my pc??
Unplugging your ethernet cable from the computer will not mess it up, only disconnect you from the Internet on the PC.
The modem stays connected by itself, independently from the PC. I regularly disconnet my PC from the net in this way, so that The 360 will have exclusive access to my Internet and no other access will draw bandwidth.
Whenever you’re done with Live, just plug it back into the PC and in a few minutes the Internet will be back on the PC without doing anything special, it will auto-detect and link back up by itself.

Ok 4 Things: 1.) If you only have 1 ethernet port(as do I and GLOBOS) you can just plug in the XBOX ethernet cable and CPU cable whenever your playing the corresponding one. Blitz: (1) You can still do it just fine with the machines still powered on. Being powered has nothing to do with it (and there’s no such thing as a CPU cable). (3) If you read the original post, it says you have to create a NEW gamertag each time you get a free month — you can’t use it over and over on the same tag. You can’t transfer it, naturally, because you’re not creating a new one. It only works on NEW gamertags you’ve just made, on the machine, with this method. You can win free months from online contests or on eBay and whatever and you’ll get a code to enter in, but you can’t do it with the method in this article.

So I just bought my xbox 360 pro (60gb hdd) 2 weeks ago and signed up for my silver account.
However, how exactly am I suppose access the Gold 1 month trial?
I bought the holiday bundle which had (Indiana Jones, Viva Pinata, got Spider Man 3 and Kung-fu Panda as a bonus from Bestbuy) – but I really did not find any “coupon” with an “access code” to sign up.
Do I even need an access code to sign up for Gold?
and if not, do I just select “Join Xbox Gold” and there will be an option for a 1month trial?
Note – I am using the new “dashboard” interface.

The very act of signing up for the silver account should have triggered the offer for the free month of gold, by saying “no, I don’t want gold yet” and insisting on silver. However, I’ve never tried it using the new NXE dashboard (as my regular trials are expired)..

@ John: I just plugged in my new Xbox and downloaded NXE right away even before setting everything up.
When you create a new account, like you said, you get the option to sign up for Gold or you can choose not to sign up. Choose not to sign up and in the next screen it tells you that you’re eligible for a free month of Live.
Just choose continue and before you know you’re back online.

im only interested in buying songs for my guitar hero’s and my rockbands. do i open the silver account with my computer and get it set up or do i just plug my ethernet from the modem to the xbox 360 and live pops up?
2nd question is so many say they buy guitar hero songs with points. can i just use a credit card to buy a handful that will remain on my xbox w harddrive once i stop a silver account. if u can only play others with gold, then what does silver allow. i bundled 3 questions in one .
Daniel: I’m under the impression that you can buy things with the silver without having to get a gold, it’s just that you have to go gold if you want to play multiplayer type things. You set up the account on the x360 itself, not on the computer (I’ve never tried it on the computer, tho, hmm).. Normally you have to log in while on the x360 to get into Live, and it won’t let you log in unless you’re wired up. With a credit card, you can buy increments of points like 500 or 1000, but not like something more specific like 275 and such. It’ll say when you go to “add microsoft points”..

Gotta restart completely new all over again, for this particular method. You could just enter in payment details and keep the old one, though. It’s like $50/yr =P

You will have to restart all over with a new profile, but I would just buy another month. A 1 month is $8, although sometimes you just cant buy it no matter ow much it costs. I never got my trial.
if you manage to do this method too many times, can Microsoft use the dreaded “Banhammer” to ban your 360 from either 1). connecting to live on an existing account or 2). prevent you from even creating a new profile to sign up for a standard silver account?
No, I believe it is an actual function of the system itself, especially since (a) there is a limitation on how many you can do, as if they knew it would be or intended for it to be discovered and purposefully set a limit, and (b) it doesn’t have anything to do with changing the code of the OS like a more malicious hack or a modder would do. I suspect they may be able to tell whether you have a modded machine, but I gravely doubt taking advantage of a function they put into the operating system itself would be a matter subject to getting banned. Plus, I doubt they could prevent anyone from making Silver accounts, since they’re free and nothing particularly weird or harmful can be done simply making a silver account (that I’m aware of).
hey my friend makes a new free one like every other month so you can def make more than 3 accounts and still get the free month of gold trial he has mae at least a dozen so far so i dont know why most people only et three i made five and i cant make anymore maybe its different for every xbox or something
It is possible that it matters on how many games have been played. Nobody has thought about that, but maybe each game you play gives you an extra month to use or something.

I think it should cost at least something, in the same way that metafilter accounts only cost $5 for a permanent account (never rebilled). It keeps out the riffraff in some ways. There are a lot of things on Xbox Live that cost money that I think shouldn’t — like gamerpics. It’s like a 30k file at best, and should not even cost anything. It’s free advertising for whoever the pic is about, at that.

You have to start fresh with a completely new gamertag each time, so you lose all of your ranking and such by changing gamertags.
Well there is a positive side towards making a new profile and starting fresh.
Halo 3 for example, you will do the training and play the ranked play lists with ppl with skills of max 6 or so. With your past experience, you could easily be MVP and rise again.
This only works if you are dedicated and not willing to pay $59.

To answer your question, you can not go back to the old dashboard. All games you purchase from now on will force you to have the NXE update before you can play them. New games will also have the update on them so an internet connection is not required.
I just made a new account and it says it has xbox live on this account but it will not let me play, when i try to play it says “the current profile is not allowed to play on xbox live”
Silver accounts are not permitted to “play” (as in multiplayer) on Xbox Live, but you can still access features like downloadable content addons or whatnot. You CAN have Xbox Live AND not be able to play on it.
I’ve seen in the “Memory” part of the System settings, that you can click on updates. I’m not at my house, so I cannot try this at the moment, but it seems like you might be able to uninstall this update.

If you purchased an Xbox360 during the first year it came out you could make 5 accounts, I have 5 gold accounts as well.
But they changed that in the later models I believe
